History of the Department of General Pedagogy and Psychology

The Department of General Pedagogy and Psychology of the Faculty of History and Pedagogy is one of the leading departments of the M.Auezov South Kazakhstan University, which trains specialists in pedagogical and psychological scientific fields.

The history of the department's development began with the reorganization of a number of higher educational institutions in the region and the merger of three universities into the M.Auezov South Kazakhstan University for the Humanities. In 1996, the Department of General Pedagogy and Ethnopedagogy was organized and began its activity.

A great contribution to the development of the department was made by Academician of the Academy of National Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Asma Akhmetovna Kalybekova, who headed the Department of General Pedagogy and Ethnopedagogy from 1998 to 2011. Asma Akhmetovna Kalybekova laid the foundation for the fruitful activity of the department with her rich practical experience, deep scientific knowledge and organizational talent. Under her scientific supervision, 5 doctoral, 35 candidate's, and 52 master's theses were defended.

In subsequent years, in order to optimize the work of the university, the departments were reorganized and renamed several times, the departments were led at various times by: PhD, Professor Arymbaeva K.M., PhD, Associate Professor Koishibayeva N.I., PhD, Professor Iskakova M.S., PhD, Professor Kabylbekova Z.B., PhD, Associate Professor Primbetova S.K., PhD, Professor Lekerova G.Zh., PhD, Associate Professor Buletova L.A., PhD Shalkharbekova N.A., PhD, Associate Professor Sakhieva F.A.

The Department of General Pedagogy and Psychology was formed by combining the departments of Modern Pedagogy and Psychology and Psychology and Special Pedagogy (Minutes 19 of August 28, 2023, by decision of the board meeting).

Currently, the Department of General Pedagogy and Psychology is headed by PhD, Associate Professor Akkenzhe Mukanovna Ussenova.

The department trains bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students in the following subjects: 6B01110 – "Pedagogy and Psychology", 6B01911 – "Special Pedagogy", 6B03130 –"Training of consulting psychologists in the social sphere", 6B01110 – "Psychology of IP", 6B03130 – "Psychology", 7M01110 – "Pedagogy and Psychology", 7M03130-"Psychology", 7M01113 – "Management in education", 7M01114 – "Psychological and pedagogical education" (two-degree), 8D01110 – "Pedagogy and Psychology".

The teaching staff of the department includes 3 Doctors of Pedagogical Sciences, professors, 2 Doctors of Psychological Sciences, professors, 5 Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences, associate professors, 1 Candidate of Psychological Sciences, associate professor, 5 Ph.D., associate professors, 15 Masters of Pedagogical Sciences, senior lecturers, and 6 Masters of Pedagogical Sciences, lecturers.

The department is taught by holders of grants "The Best University teacher", holders of the Bolashak program, badges "Ybray Altynsarin", "Akhmet Baitursynov", badges of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan "For Services to the development of Science", letters of thanks and certificates of honor, etc.

The science

Research work at the Department of «General Pedagogy and Psychology» is conducted on two state-funded topics:
1.B-21-01-12 «Modernization of the Training of Future Pedagogical Psychologists and Scientific-Pedagogical Personnel in the System of Psychological-Pedagogical Education at Universities».
2.GB NIR-21-70-10 «Psychological-Pedagogical Foundations of Competency Development of Future Specialists in the Context of the Implementation of the Program «Towards the Future: Spiritual Renewal» in the Conditions of Inclusive Education».

The department's teaching staff develops methodologies, theories, and technologies for training future pedagogical psychologists and scientific-pedagogical personnel in the system of psychological-pedagogical education at universities, in line with current trends and perspectives in education. They also define the psychological-pedagogical foundations of competency development for future specialists in the context of modern inclusive education, which is reflected in the publication activities of the department’s faculty. Scientific articles are prepared and published in national scientific conferences (MNP), journals, including international peer-reviewed scientific journals in the Scopus database, as well as in the publications of the KKSNVO.

In the 2024 academic year alone, 5 articles were published in the Scopus database, and 16 articles were published in KKSNVO journals.

As part of these state-funded research topics, preparation for the defense of doctoral and master's theses is conducted in the following areas: OP 7M01110 – «Pedagogy and Psychology», 7M03130 – «Psychology», 8D01110 – «Pedagogy and Psychology».

The faculty of the department participates in the competitions organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MSHE) for grant funding of scientific and scientific-technical projects in priority areas of social and humanitarian sciences.

The department also develops and publishes monographs, textbooks, study guides, and electronic textbooks.

Practical work of students
The Department of "General Pedagogy and Psychology" supervises educational practices, pedagogical, psychological-pedagogical practices in the pedagogical areas of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Pedagogy, Faculty of Culture and Arts, Faculty of Sports and Tourism, Faculty of History and Pedagogy, and Faculty of Philology.

The department supervises the educational, pedagogical, psychological-pedagogical, methodological, educational, production, and pre-diploma practices for the following programs: 6B01110 - "Pedagogy and Psychology", 6B01911 - "Special Pedagogy", 6B03131 - "Training of Psychologist Consultants in the Social Sphere", 6B03130 - "Psychology".

Pedagogical practice is aimed at introducing students to the actual work of an institution and the peculiarities of the teacher's professional activity, forming a professional pedagogical orientation for future teaching, mastering the practical foundations of their future profession, as well as familiarizing students with the types, forms, and content of professional-pedagogical activities of institution staff. This helps in forming a systemic "view" of the professional activity object in the entire pedagogical process.

Psychological practice aims to form the professional competence of student-psychologists as a unified system of professional knowledge, skills, abilities, and a reflective-active position.

Special pedagogical practice is focused on helping students accumulate practical experience in specialized educational institutions, master the nuances of working with children with various developmental characteristics, and develop their professional qualifications, as well as perform correctional and developmental tasks.

Educational work of the department

The educational work of the department was carried out within the framework of a plan based on the main goals and objectives of the department "educational work and Youth policy" and in 10 areas specified in the action plan of the Department for "Educational Work and Social Issues".

The purpose of educational work is to create a humanistic, highly moral educational environment that promotes the formation of an active civic position that meets the needs and expectations of modern society, and the professional competence of students.

The objectives are to form a sense of patriotism among young people, moral and spiritual development, support young people, involve students in cultural, scientific and educational processes, ensure their social rights and improve the level of education.

The name of the main 10 areas in which the work was carried out according to the plan:

Organizational work;
Civil-patriotic and legal education;
Spiritual and moral education;
Education of professional and labor orientation;
the formation of religious tolerance;
Physical education and healthy lifestyle formation;
Environmental education;
Development of a culture of intellectuality and communication;
Cultural, aesthetic and multicultural education;
Development of student self-government and youth initiatives.

The educational work of the department is carried out in accordance with the educational work plan of the department. Curatorial classes are regularly held in academic groups. The topics of the curatorial hours include the prevention of drug addiction, alcoholism and smoking, the prevention of religious extremism, the formation of legal culture and professional ethics.

Students of the department take an active part in the social, cultural and sports life of our university. He participates in various cultural and recreational events, such as reception, Health Day, Culture Days, sports contests, etc.
